Christmas Safety For Your Dog

Tis the season to be into tinsel and Christmas trees. The Holidays are here and as we are putting up our favorite ornament or singing our favorite carol to the radio, we forget that fido is watching and waiting for the time we are off our guards. The tree alone may be a hazard if sprayed with flock or pesticides and is very poisonous if licked or swallowed. Your dog may get under that freshly cut tree and drink the water thus making it hazardous if the tree has been treated to stay fresh longer. Lights also can short circuit if  chewed on potentially causing a fire.
Broken ornaments if knocked off can be very dangerous if ingested. Is there any help for all of this? Fortunately YES there is! They make doggie  pens to put around your tree much like a playpen for children. If your dog is prone to mischief and won't stay away this might be the option for you! Think about how sad you or your child may feel if their present became a chew toy! Wrapping paper may be like newspaper and seem very attractive as well as those pretty candy canes and cookies left to be eaten sneakily. A ounce of prevention is always a good idea for peace on earth and good will towards pooches!

Operation Second Chance (The jail dog program)

I think this is a great idea both for man and for beast. Too often we put away what we see as evil or dangerousness. Without faith and a little bit of hope even the largest animals can feel despair.
Being the first Jail program in Georgia was Sheriff Conway's way of making a difference in two otherwise hopeless lives. "This is a program I knew could work here" he said"  I believe in the end we will make a difference not just for the dogs, but for the inmates too!"Hopefully these inmates won't return to jail once they are released."
The Gwinnett county Sheriff's office and the Society of Humane Friends partnered together to give both an inmate and a shelter dog  such a chance.
The program gives carefully selected inmates an opportunity to give back by providing foster care and basic obedience training to homeless animals while enhancing the inmates social and job skills. The program is taught by volunteer citizen dog trainers who will instruct the inmates on how to care for their assigned dogs.
During each training each dog will be socialized through interaction with people and animals. It gives a chance to animals who would otherwise be euthanized, love and support.
Benefits to the community are lower cost for animal control as well as lower numbers of euthanization at local shelters. It also provides well-trained dogs for adoption and more productive members of society.
My  daughter Sara works at Pet's ect in Lawrenceville a shop dedicated to providing animals of every kind nutritious food as well as dedication to the awareness of  pet's who need homes,  they are taking donations for this worthy cause! This is the time of year we wish for peace on earth and good will towards men. Let's also extend this good will towards our four legged friends as well.
